The Diabetes Education Service is one of the services offered by the Patient Education Department. The goal of the Diabetes Nurse Educator is to provide instruction and information within the American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines that will enable individuals to understand diabetes, take control of it, and manage it as independently and effectively as possible by accomplishing the participant’s desired health outcome statements and goals.
The following topics can be discussed with a registered nurse who specializes in all aspects of diabetic care:
- Definition of types
- Diet with carbohydrate counting
- ADA guidelines for laboratory target ranges
- Help in the prevention of acute and long-term complications through routine health care
- Self blood glucose monitoring ( SBGM)
- Management of sick days
- Information about oral agents and insulin
- Signs/symptoms and treatment of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
- Smoking cessation
- Living and coping with diabetes
- Gestational diabetes and its management

In order to submit an appointment to your insurance company, people must obtain a referral from a physician. Self-pay is also available without a referral.
