When you are living with prolapse of your bladder, rectum or uterus, you might think you should deal with it silently. Carlisle Regional Medical Center now offers an advanced treatment option to help you get back to living life.
Currently, pelvic organ prolapse affects approximately half of women over the age of 50. The condition occurs when organs in the pelvic region move from their normal location, causing a woman to experience problems using the bathroom or to feel discomfort in the pelvic area.
"Women can suffer from pelvic organ prolapse for many reasons," says Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dina L. Schweitzer, MD, FACOG at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
"Aging is the main reason, but vaginal childbirth and strenuous work also can cause a prolapse."
Carlisle Regional now offers the Gynecare Prolift system for women dealing with pelvic organ prolapse.
How It Works
Unlike traditional surgery, the Prolift system involves inserting a soft synthetic mesh material around the prolapsing uterus, bladder or rectum.
"The Prolift system provides strong and permanent support for the prolapsed tissues like no other surgical repair," says Dr. Schweitzer. "Women have minimal discomfort and most go home after an overnight stay and can return to normal activities in two weeks."
"The Gynecare Prolift system is amazing. After surgery, I didn't need any medication for pain and was home the next day." ~ Linda Lesher, Carlisle Regional Medical Center patient
